AOS News Submission Guidelines

1. Content

Articles pertaining to any area of optics relevant to the Australian optics community are appropriate for publication. Topics are usually within the author's area of expertise. They may take the form of a technical note, a summary of research results, a review of a specific field of optics or a report on a conference, meeting or other event relevant to optics. News items of any kind are welcome.

Recently published work is appropriate provided that the submission differs from that which was published (for instance, the article may draw together several published results, or reflect on those results in a different way). Submissions following from conference presentations are appropriate.

Break your article up using section headings as you would a journal publication. Include an introduction and 2-3 line abstract. Figures help to make your article look interesting on the page. Most submissions range between about 1,500 and 2,500 words (there is about 700 words to a page in the absence of figures).

Submissions will be assessed by editors and will pass through a (simple) review process.

2. Method of Submission

Choose from one of the following...

• (a) Email to the State Branch Editor (prefered method)
• (b) Email to the Editor (prefered method)
• (c) Mail hardcopy (1 copy only is required)

Submissions should be sent to the relevant State Branch Editor [C. Chantler, VIC; M. de Sterke, Dept of Theoretical Physics, U. Sydney NSW 2006, desterke@physics.usyd.edu.au; K. Baldwin, ACT; H. Rubinstein-Dunlop, QLD] or the Editor .

If you choose either of the electronic forms of submission and have graphics or equations in your article you may be asked to submit a hard copy as well (see below), although in most cases this is not required.

4. Graphics

• Black and white dithered images
  These can turn out OK only if they are printed at 600DPI or higher. Even then expect some loss of quality. Try a dye-sublimation printer if you have one.
• Black and white photographs
  These work fine. The original does not need to be the final size.
• Colour photographs and transparencies
  These work fine. The original does not need to be the final size.
• Negative transparencies
  Not accepted.
• Black and white line drawings
  These work fine. The original does not need to be the final size.

5. Graphics Formats

You will make the editor's life very easy if you can manage the following formats for your graphics :

• Line drawings
  
  • separate encapsulated postscript files (one for each picture). Make the bounding box as small as possible.
  • Microsoft Draw or other embedded object in the word processor file.
• Grey-scale/Colour Images
  • Supplied in approximately the final size
