Alan Vaughan obtained a BSc(Hons) and a PhD (1975) at the University of Sydney. The title of the thesis was Pulsar Observations at Molonglo. He has been a member of the academic staff at Macquarie University since 1975 in the Department of Physics. He is presently a Senior - Lecturer in Physics. He has been responsible for the setting up of a number of 1st, 2nd and 3rd year units in Physics, including the popular Astronomy unit. He has also been responsible for the development of the Astronomy and Astrophysics BSc program. He initiated the formation of the Foundation for Astronomy whose many activities have led to the funding of an educational astronomical observatory to be built at the University. Research activities have included searches for transient astronomical events, observations of active stars, southern radio surveys, interacting galaxies and measurement of old astronomical plates for proper motion studies. He has supervised a number of PhD and MSc students and many honours projects.
