About the Department of Physics
The Physics Department at Macquarie
University
is well known for its emphasis on research and postgraduate
education at the highest standard, for its quality undergraduate physics
program, for its innovative approach to education including its well
established Bachelor of Optical Technology, and for its
contributions to university, national and international committees, policies
and processes. The Physics Department is home to the renowned Centre for
Lasers and Applications (CLA) and is also home to the programs of two Centres of
Excellence: the Centre for Quantum Computer Technology (CQCT) and the Centre for
Ultra-high-bandwidth Devices for Optical Systems (CUDOS). The Astronomy and
Astrophysics group has recently grown and has strong formal ties with the
Anglo-Australian Observatory. The Department also has strong research
efforts in Biotechnology and in semiconductor research.
Macquarie University is about 18 km from the centre of Sydney, located in leafy suburbs and conveniently close to many high-tech firms. Sydney's amenities and natural beauty are not far from the University, and the city of four million offers the culture, cuisine and complexity of the world's greatest cities.
