DEGREES

1967 BSc(Hons), University of Sydney (Second Class Honours Division I)
1974 PhD, University of Sydney

MEMBERSHIP

Fellow of the Astronomical Society of Australia.

POSITIONS HELD

1974-1975 Temporary Senior Tutor at the University of Sydney
1975-2007 Senior Tutor/Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Physics at Macquarie University.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

My teaching has included a full range of units in Physics and Astronomy,
several of which I have fully developed.
I have conducted in-service training courses for teachers of the astronomy
option in the HSC physics syllabus.
As part of the teaching in astronomy I established a small optical astronomical
observatory on the campus which has been used for small research projects as well.

COMMUNITY EDUCATION IN ASTRONOMY

In 1988 I started the Macquarie University Foundation for Astronomy to
foster education in astronomy. Through the Foundation I have conducted
Astronomy Open Nights twice a year since 1988 with an average attendance
of over 1000 people. I have also conducted bus tours to various observatories
in country NSW and an annual weekend School of Astronomy at the University.
Funding obtained through Foundation activities will allow the extension of the
University Observatory to become a public - access educational observatory.

J Lim (1991)
N Tasker (2000)
K McDonnell (current))

MSc Students:

T Getts (2003)
R Lipka (2001)

Honours Students:

I have supervised 14 honours students .

ADMINISTRATIVE EXPERIENCE

I have undertaken the usual administrative duties expected of academic staff at
a university. In addition I have administered the Foundation for Astronomy and
organised all of its activities. In 1995, and again in 2007, I was Chairman of the local organizing
committee of the annual meeting of the Astronomical Society of Australia.

OUTLINE OF RECENT AND CURRENT RESEARCH

I participated in the first successful searches for pulsars in the Southern
Hemisphere during the late 1960's and early to mid 1970's, using the Molonglo
Radio Telescope operated by the University of Sydney. From the mid 1970's to
the early 1980's I was a colleague in the search for celestial transient events at
radio frequencies, showing that very few if any of these events in fact occur.
Since the early 1980's I have observed active stars at radio frequencies at
Molonglo, Parkes and the Australia Telescope Compact Array at Narrabri
in order to determine the emission processes at different radio frequencies.
I have been involved in following up the PMN survey at
4850 MHz, producing an atlas of the southern sky at this frequency.
My most recent work has involved the measurement of stellar proper motions by
scanning old photographic plates and deriving star positions. I have also been
observing planetary nebulae at radio-frequencies.
